The Sydney International Fencing Festival, held from 28 September to 2 October 2024, saw fierce competition from young athletes around Australia and Asia Pacific, with one standout performer being 14-year-old Malaysian fencer Saif Nordin.
Competing in both the Under 14 and Cadet Foil categories, Saif claimed gold in both events, making a mark for himself and Malaysian fencing.
Saif’s technique and composure were evident throughout the tournament, and he displayed maturity beyond his years in high-pressure moments. In the Under 14 final, he out-maneuvered his Australian opponent, Owen Zhong Ho Chit, in a thrilling bout to secure victory with a 15-4 score.
The Cadet final saw Saif in peak form again, where he dominated with sharp attacks and swift footwork with a 15-7 win against Australian fencer, Thomas Deller.
After reflecting on his achievement, Saif said, “Winning both categories feels great. It’s an honour to bring these medals home to Malaysia. I’ve trained really hard with my coaches and teammates. To see the effort pay off at such a prestigious event means a lot to me.”
The double gold win highlights Saif as a rising talent in the fencing world, adding to the growing talent pool Malaysia is cultivating in the sport. With the Sydney International Fencing Festival serving as a platform for young fencers, Saif’s performance has undoubtedly placed him as a fencer to watch in the future on the international stage.
