Malaysia announces national cricket squad, gears up for ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup

    The Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) today announced the national Under-19 women’s cricket squad set to compete in the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup (U19WC 2025), which kicks off today and runs until 2 February 2025.

    The 18-member squad includes 14 active players and 4 reserves, representing diverse states across Malaysia. Leading the team is captain Nur Dania Syuhada Binti Abedul Samad from Sarawak, who aims to inspire her squad against some of the world’s best young cricketers. Malaysia’s first match is against Sri Lanka tomorrow (19 January 2025) at 10:30 am at the Bayuemas Cricket Oval in Pandamaran, Klang.

    Speaking at the announcement event, MCA president Mohammed Iqbal Ali bin Kassim Ali expressed pride in the players’ dedication. “These young athletes, led by team captain Nur Dania Syuhada Binti Abedul Samad, embody the spirit of determination and excellence that Malaysian cricket stands for. Their selection is the result of rigorous training and an unyielding commitment to the sport. As they step onto the international stage, we are confident they will make the nation proud,” said Mohammed Iqbal.

    Malaysia is hosting the ICC U19WC for the first time, with matches scheduled across four venues: Bayuemas Cricket Oval (Klang), YSD-UKM Cricket Oval (Bangi), Johor Cricket Academy Oval, and the Borneo Cricket Ground (Kuching, Sarawak).

    Lauding the passion and commitment of the national squad, Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, when speaking to the media, said, “We have with us young women who are sitting for their SPM (Malaysian Certificate of Education) and concurrently competing in the World Cup. So, I am here today to encourage them. They desire to make it to the Super Six. They will (first) meet three strong teams here: West Indies, India and Sri Lanka.”

    The Minister also highlighted the significance of the event and thanked the International Cricket Council (ICC) for selecting Malaysia as the host country for this year’s World Cup.

    “This is a pivotal moment for Malaysian sports, as the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup provides a significant platform to showcase the talent and potential of our young cricketers. The Ministry of Youth and Sports remains committed to supporting initiatives that develop grassroots talent and bring international recognition to Malaysia,” stated Hannah who presented the jerseys to the national squad this morning.

    Mohammed Iqbal, who was a former national cricketer and team captain, added, “Playing and representing the country in this World Cup is an event that will be etched in their memories for the rest of their lives as they will compete against some of the future stars in the world of women’s cricket. More importantly, the exposure they will gain here will position them well for future competitions, including the SEA Games in Thailand later this year.”
