The Malaysia edition of the Asian Cadet Cup 2024 proved to be a sterling outing for the Malaysian men’s cadet foil team. Hosted in Kuala Lumpur at the Tan Sri Hamzah Arena at Wisma OCM (Olympic Council of Malaysia) between 2 and 5 September, the event saw individual fencers and teams participate from across Asia.
Host Malaysia, following the individual component of the tournament, were ranked second while fencing powerhouse, Hong Kong was ranked first going into the men’s foil team event.
The Hong Kong team which comprised fencers Chan Thierry, Ho Shing Him Harris, Hui Ho Chun Edwin and Wong Chit Daniel were favourites going into the final while the Malaysian team which included Chang Kai Yong, Goh Lucas Yew Hee, Saif Nordin and Yunus Ewan Weishan were clear underdogs going into the final match.
In the early rounds of the encounter, Malaysia took a slender lead, with the scores at 15-12 after the first three bouts. The Hong Kong team, however, was able to turn the tide and finished the match 45-26 to take home the coveted men’s team foil gold medal.
When speaking to News Hub Asia, Saif Nordin shared, “Today was about teamwork, and the whole team worked hard to get to the final. Hong Kong fought well and they deserved the win today. It was great to have everyone supporting us at this important tournament.”
“We have to keep working hard off the piste to build up our stamina so that we have enough energy to fight to the last point in a final. This tournament has been a learning experience for all of us,” continued Saif.
The next edition of the Asia Cadet Cup will be hosted in Amman, Jordan in October this year.
