During his inaugural international visit to Malaysia, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia had the honour of welcoming the Rt Hon Ian Murray MP, Secretary of State for Scotland. The occasion not only highlighted the university’s global significance but also coincided with the launch of the Brand Scotland initiative in Malaysia and Singapore.
Accompanied by David Wallace, acting high commissioner at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, the Scottish Secretary of State was warmly received at the university’s sustainable campus in Putrajaya last Thursday (28 November) by Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, provost and chief executive officer of Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, along with members of the institution’s leadership team.
“It was a real privilege to visit Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, and to meet staff and students on the campus,” said Murray. “As a renowned university with a truly global footprint, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is promoting Scotland, and Scottish higher education in the region, while strengthening educational ties between Scotland and Malaysia.
“Heriot-Watt is leading the way in research and innovation, equipping students for some of our most important growth sectors like renewable energy, engineering, and life sciences. Our Scottish universities punch well above their weight internationally, and this is another glowing example of their world-leading education,” he added.
Professor Mushtak expressed the university’s pride in hosting the Scottish Secretary of State, emphasising Heriot-Watt’s commitment to delivering high-quality British education and nurturing leaders with purpose. “Today’s visit by the Secretary of State for Scotland underscores the vital role education plays in bridging cultures and empowering future generations to lead with purpose. Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is a shining example of how global partnerships in education can prepare future leaders to tackle the world’s greatest challenges.”
A key highlight of the visit was an engaging discussion moderated by Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Student Association President, Pearlyn Tan. Students explored the future of work, Scotland’s leadership in emerging industries, and education’s role in fostering sustainable development.
The Secretary of State also engaged in discussions with the university’s leadership on sustainability, innovation in education, research and enterprise. Talks explored collaborative opportunities between Scotland and Malaysia, particularly in innovation and academic exchange.
This landmark visit reinforces the UK Government’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in education and innovation while celebrating the strengthening ties between Scotland and Malaysia.
