- Mount Sinabung’s activity has increased since August last year and the alert for the volcano in North Sumatra province has been placed at the second-highest level.
- No casualties were reported, but an official had earlier urged people to stay at least 3 km from the crater, Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre said.
- Videos on social media showed little panic among residents over the eruption, which sent a column of white ash into the blue sky.
- Indonesia has nearly 130 active volcanoes, more than any other country and Sinabung had been inactive for centuries before it erupted again in 2010.
