GoCar Malaysia launches one-way intracity and interstate drop off with pay-per-minute option

According to latest statement,as interstate travels resumes under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), GoCar Malaysia joins tourism players in welcoming domestic travellers again as they become the first car-sharing platform in Malaysia to allow one-way trips within Klang Valley and for interstate travels via a pay-per-minute model.

Free Floating, GoCar’s latest feature, witnessed the company innovating their services to make car-sharing more affordable and flexible as the public regains confidence in travelling again. This follows the success of the service’s beta launch on 28 May that witnessed tremendous growth in active users and an 800% increase in Free Floating bookings in the past month.

Unlike GoCar’s existing Round Trip option, Free Floating provides users with the flexibility to drive one-way without pre-selecting a location and time to return the car. It also introduces a pay-per-minute payment concept by using GoPocket points, which requires a minimum of RM50 (5,000 GoPocket points) in the account before making a booking.

This is how Free Floating works:

    • Launch the GoCar Malaysia app and switch to the Free Floating map view

    • Select the nearest pick-up location to book a car

    • A base rate of RM0.99 (99 GoPocket points) and minute rate of RM0.17 (17 GoPocket points) will be charged after confirming your trip within the 10-minute grace period

    • Subsequently, charges start from RM0.17 per minute

    • To return the car, select an available drop-off location in the app to reserve the spot for up to 45 minutes

    • Drive to the selected drop-off location and end your trip in the GoCar app

Jasdev Singh, an active GoCar user since 2017, is impressed by the new feature. “I started using Free Floating because I need to travel to and from the airport for work. The service is convenient for me as I don’t have to worry about looking for parking space or pay for it. There’s flexibility to decide later on which GoCar location to return the car to, as long as I have enough GoPocket points in my account.”

Alan Cheah, CEO of GoCar Malaysia shared that Free Floating is the first of a series of new products to launch in the upcoming months . “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way

we travel and think about travelling forever. While our business was greatly affected when the Movement Control Order (MCO) started in March, it allowed us to take a step back, rethink our existing products and services, and work on solutions based on past surveys with our users. This is to make GoCar more affordable, accessible, and convenient when Malaysians are ready to travel again. It all goes back to our vision of providing a seamless mobility experience for our community in the long run.”

“In early August, we are launching the beta version of GoDriver. This feature will give users a stress-free travel option to book a personal driver with a car at very affordable rates. The service is priced starting from RM179 for 4 hours minimum to get around within Klang Valley, with a RM50 surcharge to travel to other states. Next, the team is getting ready to launch GoValet which provides door-to-door car delivery. We have these plans in the pipeline for later in the year, but we decided to speed things up and launch them in succession based on what our users would like to see from GoCar next.”

Free Floating locations are currently available at over 100 locations across 6 states — Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan, Penang, Perak, Johor, Negeri Sembilan. The feature is included in the GoCar Malaysia app from version 4.0.14 onwards on iOS and Android devices.
