Lynas Malaysia celebrates local partnerships at Vendor Appreciation Day 2024, confirms 80 per cent suppliers are locals

Lynas Malaysia celebrated over 10 years of partnering with Malaysian businesses at its 2024 Vendor Appreciation Day. The event, which was held in Kuantan, Pahang, yesterday highlighted the company’s continued commitment to investing in the Malaysian economy and the skills and prosperity of its local communities.

Lynas Rare Earths chief executive officer and managing director, Amanda Lacaze, commented, “Our Vendor Appreciation Day recognises the valuable role local businesses play in Lynas’ ongoing success as the only significant producer of separated rare earths outside China. Many of the suppliers in attendance have worked closely with us since our operations first started in Malaysia and have grown as our business has grown.”

According to a statement by Lynas Malaysia, over 80 per cent of its suppliers are headquartered in Malaysia and Lynas has contributed close to RM5 billion to Malaysia’s GDP since 2013.

Lynas Malaysia employs over 850 people, 98 per cent of whom are Malaysian nationals. Of this, 93 per cent of staff are engaged in skilled or semi-skilled roles and average wages are three times the Malaysian national average.

“We are proud to employ local people and local suppliers. This is one of the ways we can contribute to the communities in which we work and live and share the sustainable benefits of our operations,” continued Lacaze.

Lynas Malaysia supplies essential materials to produce the technologies Malaysians rely on daily. Supplying products into globally critical supply chains, many customers are sensitive to compliance and governance issues. In line with this, Lynas has become a catalyst for elevating its suppliers’ procedures and the surrounding business ecosystem.

Lacaze added that Malaysia, through Lynas, has become the only rare earths centre of excellence outside of China, and “our people and partners have played an important role in developing and maintaining this position.”

She continued, “We are proud of the investment we have made in our people who are today recognised as world-leading experts and of the benefits that flow from our operations to businesses in Pahang and throughout Malaysia.”

The rare earth materials processed at the Lynas Malaysia plant in Gebeng, Pahang, are used in industries where environmental provenance and sustainability are crucial. Lynas offers rare earth products to the global market with assured provenance from mine to finished product, meeting the high standards expected by customers, investors, and communities.

Lacaze concluded, “We thank the companies who have supported Lynas throughout the years, including some challenging times and are proud to share insights and best practices with our suppliers to ensure we continue to uphold the highest standards.” News Hub Asia's new seal logo is a black spot with the letters 'NHA' inscribed in the centre with three diagonal dots in white.
