The showcase was officially launched on 30 August by Professor Dr Maszlee Malik, chairman of the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia. His presence, along with the support of the wider community, underscored the significance of the event as more than just an art exhibition—it is a celebration of the nation’s independence and shared identity.

In his Facebook post following the launch, Maszlee said, “The fact is that art is the heartbeat of a country. Art is a medium of communication between artists and society across time and geographical boundaries. Art is the silver lining of a nation’s history and the realm where artistic people can speak in their true voices to the world.”

He further emphasised the importance of including art in education with the hope that art will not be marginalised in the Malaysian education system. He also commended the organisers, Art Market Malaysia, and the painters, artists, and all the supporters and collaborators for their efforts in putting together a meaningful showcase.

In addition to the visual art, attendees at the launch were treated to special musical performances. Ayie and Michael Chan took to the stage with a heartfelt rendition of the iconic Merdeka song, filling the gallery with a sense of pride and nostalgia. Their performance served as a fitting tribute to the nation’s independence.

The combination of live music, stirring art, and cultural pride created an atmosphere of celebration and reflection. Many in attendance were moved by the way the event captured the essence of the Merdeka spirit, bringing together art and music to honour the country’s independence.

A Diverse Showcase of Malaysian Art

The eclectic exhibition features approximately 80 pieces of artwork, including a diverse array of paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media installations. Each piece represents a unique interpretation of the Malaysian experience, drawing inspiration from the country’s rich history, landscapes, and cultural diversity.
