Dow TF-BOPE Sustainable Packaging Solutions and ENGAGE(TM) PV POE win 2018 R&D 100 Awards

SINGAPOREDec. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Today, Dow announced that its Tenter Frame Biaxially Orientable Polyethylene Resin (TF-BOPE), a new innovative polyethylene resin developed in Asia, has been presented with an award for Innovation Impact. The R&D 100 Awards marks the product’s second accolade this year, having earlier been awarded with the Ringier Technology Innovation, demonstrating Dow’s dedication to providing industry-leading solutions that combine the very best of science and technology.

Providing twice the impact strength and tensile modulus and three times the tensile strength of traditional polyethylene solutions, TF-BOPE also offers higher mechanical properties and material rigidity, as well as improved optical and printing performance.

“We are extremely proud that TF-BOPE, an Asia-led and developed product, has been recognised for its transformative capabilities,” said Bambang Candra, commercial vice-president for Packaging and Specialty Plastics in Asia Pacific. “TF-BOPE serves as a better, more sustainable substitute to substrates currently used in flexible packaging, with improved recyclability, performance and end-of-life value.”

Tyson China now utilizes TF-BOPE in their packaging for chicken feet in the China market. Dow’s TF-BOPE improved impact and puncture resistance at lower temperature results in cost savings for Tyson China, eliminating expensive substrates like BOPA from the structure and reducing the quantity of packaging material needed by moving from bag-in-bag to a single bag.

Alongside TF-BOPE, Dow’s photovoltaic resin, ENGAGE™ PV Polyolefin Elastomers (POEs) was also listed as one of the winners at the R&D 100 Awards. Recognised for its applications aligned to sustainability objectives, ENGAGE™ PV POEs is used in photovoltaic encapsulant films, bringing long-term performance, lower energy costs and high reliability.

“We are confident in our ability to resolve the challenges faced by our customers today,” said Wu Chang, technical service and development director for Packaging and Specialty Plastics in Asia Pacific. “At Dow, we are innovating and experimenting to ensure our solutions provide the competitive edge enabling our customers to successfully meet identified market needs, while keeping sustainability at the heart of everything we do.”

The R&D Awards

Commonly touted as the “Oscars of Invention”, the R&D 100 Awards celebrates the top 100 revolutionary technologies of the year. TF-BOPE was among six Dow products to receive an R&D 100 accolade, making Dow the most recognized company in 2018.
