CEO of Sapura Energy, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Shahril Shamsuddin, has a personal interest in the company’s corporate social responsibilities (CSR) and is the driving force behind the initiatives, giving approval to plans that he deems appropriate and beneficial for Malaysian communities.
Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin decided the CSR efforts should be focused on education, environment, community, and employee engagement.
According to the annual report, the company encourage employees to volunteer to contribute towards initiatives outside of the company.
Sapura Energy values education as a CSR to improve knowledge in others to enact positive changes in their lives.
Through collaborations with Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and corporations in the oil and gas industry, employee volunteers helped to promote safe fishing near offshore operations in Kampung Pantai Getting, Tumpat, Kelantan through the ‘Karnival Sahabat Maritim Mega’ programme.
This programme allowed volunteers to teach sustainable fishing practices to locals, which will empower the community to use safer, practical methods of fishing to their benefit.
The environment is another core CSR initiative of Sapura Energy, as they value saving and sustaining the natural environment.
The ‘Save the Turtles’ programme was organized by Sapura, to promote greater awareness on the conservation of sea turtles and marine environment. This was planned with the Department of Fisheries in Segari, Lumut, Perak.
The aim of the programme is to stabilise and increase the sea turtle population. Efforts that Sapura has taken towards achieving this includes releasing more than 50 baby turtles into the sea.
Employee volunteers have also taken part in gotong-royong activities at the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre through cleaning up the pool, beach and surrounding areas towards the programme.
Community involvement is a strong objective of Sapura Energy as supporting locals helps boost Malaysia’s economy.
An example of a community related CSR initiative that volunteer employees of Sapura have been involved in is the ‘Make-A-Wish Malaysia’ foundation, where they collaborated with Yayasan Siti Sapura Husin and visited children in the pediatric wards in hospitals in the Klang Valley and rejuvenated an orphanage under Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Al-Nasuha in Selangor.
The volunteer work of Sapura Energy helps improve the lives of community members and strengthen community relations, whilst bringing greater awareness to local issues and people that are affected by them.
Employees are also encouraged to donate their blood to the National Blood Bank and their blood drives.
Employee engagement allows Sapura Energy to positively reinforce their values of human rights and diversity.
Hosting weekly sporting activities such as football, being representatives of the company in the Malaysian Oil and Gas Services Council’s annual bowling and futsal competitions creates a friendly team environment where everyone can be included.
Diversity is encouraged and accepted at Sapura Energy as employees were invited to the Hari Raya Aidili tri open house and Chinese New Year Gathering.
Sapura’s four CSR initiatives of education, environment, community and employee engagement align with the oil and gas company’s core sustainability matters of economic value creation, employee management, community development, and environmental management.
If Sapura continuies to align CSR initiatives with sustainability matters, Malaysia will see positive, sustainable changes within their communities.
